Dirt
by Jay Coral

worries melted
on this beautiful day
i drank my soda
then saw dirt dripping
like a landslide on the can
it was my hand
there was shame clasped
under the shadows of the table
and i was embarrassed
for i couldn’t wash
my friends’ eyes
my nails were digging the grime
when they asked me
if i am saved
saved from what
saved from hell
by claiming heaven
now, they mean, right now
their expressions
of angelic sadness
when i opened my palm
i read doubts
furrowed on destiny line
and caught frowns
on prominent noses
before they could say more
i smeared soot on my face
and amidst their ghostly gasp
laughed my ungodly laugh.

  1. I really enjoyed this. The metaphor is perfect, and I really like how visceral it is.
